'Negative book' #69, 2012/2013

‘’Negative Book’ takes place between two media - photography and performance. Subsequent, black and white photographs show the artist with her family, at home, traveling, in the foreground of a landscape. We watch all these scenes in a negative, only the body of the main heroine preserve the light, ‘positive’ hue. To obtain this effect, Grzeszykowska was subject to a detailed make-up, painting her skin black and adding white shades accordingly. This is how she appeared before lends and, at the same time, in her natural environment, involuntarily creating a touching, absurd performance.
The term of negative obviously relates here to the traditional photographic technique, but what is more important to the artist is its wide understanding as a reversion, contradiction, negation. The artist continues the play with her own image, she ‘disappears’ in an indefinite space between the real and the virtual, the identical and the different’. In 1993-94 she studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. Between 1994-99 she studied at the Faculty of Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1999 she graduated from this Faculty with distinction. In 1999 she became the laureate of the competition named ‘Images of Europe’, organized by the European Cultural Foundation in Amsterdam (with Jan Smaga), from 1999 she co-works artistically with Jan Smaga. In 2003, she was awarded the scholarship of the Minister of Culture (with Jan Smaga).
