'Lines' - diptych, 1975

The work of Pawel Kwiek constitutes a unique documentation of his performative activity using a film camera during the ‘Unidentified activity’ exhibition in Lublin. The artist initiated interaction with the audience by performing the commands it gave him. What Kwiek did was presented on a television receiver in the room.
The artist’s next performance was a reproduction of performing the audience’s commands in a hotel lobby, but this time, Pawel Kwiek obeyed commands played from a tape recording. This performance took place on the day just after the original exhibition, in a different city, no less.
On the third day, Kwiek presented the performance at the Slad gallery in Lodz. He stood with his back to the viewers with a television receiver on his back, on which the pre-recorded situations from Lublin and the hotel in Lodz were played back.
The performance lasted for about 45 minutes, and this time was dictated by the number of commands issued to the artist by the audience in Lublin. By his actions, Pawel Kwiek wished to draw attention to the impact of decisions made by the audience, which proved to be exhausting for the performer, bringing the audience an awareness of the gravity of day-to-day decisions, which may have a significant influence on the lives of others.
He is a graduate of the National Film School in Lodz, Direction of Photography and Television Production Department. During the years 1975-76, he worked as a director at the Educational Film Production House in Lodz, and during 1976-77, as an operator at the Documentary Film Production House in Warsaw. He lectured at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and at the National Film School in Lodz. He also worked as light engineer at the Telewizja Polska (TVP) public broadcaster. He is a member of the Association of Polish Film Producers and Association of Polish Art Photographers. Member of the Film Workshop until 1980. Starting from 1970, he took part in many presentations of Polish art in the country and abroad. He makes films, photographs, artistic campaigns, and he is concerned with theoretic and poetic activity. Distinguished by the 150th Anniversary of Polish Photography Medal.
