Selma Blair (b. 1972) - American actress known for her leading role in Cruel Intentions. Ballen shot this original fashion session for the New York Times in October 2005. The photographs illustrated an article entitled Selma Blari Witch Project. In 2006, Ballen received the esteemed Art Directors Award for his series of photographs including the featured work.

Roger Ballen is one of the most distinguished present-day photographers. He was born in New York, but for over 30 years has lived in South Africa, where he initially worked as a geologist. At the time, he made his first documentary photographs of small dorps and villages. In the 1990s, Ballen developed his own style, which he refers to as "documentary fiction". After 2000, he invited the people from the margins of South-African society he had photographed before to be actors in his disturbing Outland and Shadow Chamber series of photographs. His work is characterised by fragmentary presentation of human figure, with parts of the body replaced by drawings, photographs and masks. Other well-known series of Ballen`s photographs include: Dorps, Platteland, Boarding House, Asylum of the Birds. Ballen has also made films, including the I Fink U Freeky video for the South-African band Die Antwoord.

Roger Ballen jest jednym z najważniejszych współczesnych fotografów. Urodził się w Nowym Jorku, jednak od ponad 30 lat mieszka w RPA, gdzie początkowo, zgodnie z wykształceniem, pracował jako geolog. Wtedy powstały jego pierwsze, dokumentalne fotografie wynikające z zainteresowania osobnym światem małych miast (tzw. Dorps). W latach 90. Ballen rozwinął swój własny styl, który określa jako "dokumentalną fikcję". Ludzie z marginesów południowoafrykańskiego społeczeństwa, których życie początkowo dokumentował, po roku 2000, stali się aktorami pracującymi z nim przy niepokojących cyklach Outland i Shadow Chamber. Charakterystyczne jest w jego fotografiach fragmentaryczne przedstawienie postaci ludzkiej poprzez zastępowanie części ciała wizerunkami rysunkowymi, zdjęciami, maskami. Inne znane cykle artysty: Dorps, Platteland, Boarding House, Asylum of the Birds. Jest także autorem filmów, m.in. wideoklipu I Fink U Freeky południowoafrykańskiego zespołu Die Antwoord.
